Your responsibilities

You will work on the optical design and the simulation of complex optical systems for AR and VR data glasses. In this role, you will analyze, design, and optimize optical systems in consideration of manufacturing and metrology aspects, as well as visual image perception. You will examine the influences of manufacturing tolerances on the optical performance and develop corresponding optimization suggestions. You will advise and support the development of measurement technology with the simulations that you have created.

You have

• a PhD in physics or mathematics
• very good knowledge in Optics and Optical Design
• experience in design and simulation of optical systems with CODE V, Zemax, LightTools, and Speos
• knowledge in using CAD-software and mechanical analysis tools to optimize optomechanical performance
• a creative and goal-oriented approach and the desire to find solutions to complex problems
• very good English skills for daily discussions with our colleagues and customers

Your responsibilities

As a Development Engineer Metrology at tooz, you are responsible for

• Developing specifications, directly related to binocular vision correction for projection optics but also with respect to the overall system of smart and AR glasses
• Designing and implementing binocular alignment metrology and qualification tools and processes for series production of prescription solutions for AR systems
• Prepare, document and present project status reports and decision proposals for various audiences

Requirements

• A very good degree in engineering or science, preferably in optics or optical technology
• Several years of experience in development, ideally also in the field of visual correction
• Strong interest in optics and new processes

At Photonics West SPIE | AR VR MR 2024, tooz and North Ocean Photonics announced their collaboration, presenting a planar diffractive waveguide seamlessly integrated with vision correction for Augmented Reality (AR) glasses. The partnership between the ZEISS venture and the Chinese high-tech enterprise signifies a leap forward in the market readiness of prescription (Rx) technology for waveguides. Photonics West SPIE | AR VR MR 2024 in San Francisco is the premier conference and exhibition for hardware and technologies for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality. Running from January 29 to January 31, the event provides a platform for companies to showcase their latest innovations, establish connections with potential customers and partners, and shape industry trends.

A powerful alliance for Rx-enabled planar waveguides

As part of his keynote on the SPIE stage, tooz CEO Dr. Kai Stroeder announced the expansion of the company’s prescription-based optics portfolio through its strategic collaboration with Chinese micro-optics company North Ocean Photonics. The partners joined forces in 2023 to deliver diffractive planar waveguides with seamlessly integrated, individual vision correction. Through a combination of push and pull lenses attached to the planar waveguide, the smart glasses wearer can then see both the AR content and the environment sharp and the augmentation in the desired distance.

Cutting-edge planar waveguides by North Ocean Photonics

Headquartered in Shanghai, China, North Ocean Photonics is a high-tech company specializing in wafer-level optics and optical integration. This is the first time that the complete process from initial eye measurement by an optometrist to receiving a pair of smart glasses with one’s individual eye prescription is provided at an event.

From May 31 until June 2, the exhibition provides an opportunity for companies to showcase their latest products and technologies, connect with potential customers and partners, and shape industry trends.

Up-close experience of the prescription process
At the exhibition, tooz will be demonstrating a novel customer experience for smart glasses by incorporating vision correction, a process that was not yet defined by the industry. Visitors to the tooz booth will have the opportunity to get their refractive error measured via an autorefraction measurement with a ZEISS VISUREF 150. Based on the values from the on-site live measurement, a pair of smart glasses with appropriate correction will be selected to compensate for the refractive error. tooz glasses can serve all kinds of visual needs, most importantly nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). Visitors will experience the ophthalmic wearable firsthand and learn about its visual augmentation feature. Because of the seamlessly integrated, waveguide-based correction solution, visitors with vision impairment will see both the visual augmentation and the surroundings clearly and sharply.

With ESSNZ Berlin, tooz launches its first pair of prescription glasses with augmentation for all-day use. The ophthalmic wearable will be presented for the first time to the public at AWE USA 2022 starting from 1st of June in Santa Clara, USA.

tooz technologies, a joint venture of Zeiss and Deutsche Telekom, focuses on the development of optics for smart glasses with individual prescription. By launching its first pair of smart glasses for developers in 2020, tooz has already proven that the start-up is able to design and produce optical platforms that enable cost-effective, fully working turnkey smart glass solutions. After another 1.5 years of development, the team now unveils the next generation: a pair of prescription glasses with augmentation dedicated for the end consumer market.

The so-called ESSNZ Berlin displays information in the wearer’s field of view while keeping the initial function – individual vision correction – of everyday glasses. With a slim and stylish form factor, the ophthalmic device is almost indistinguishable from regular everyday glasses.

Unique tooz optics for ophthalmic smart glasses
The curved waveguide lens is the centerpiece of smart glass solutions by tooz. With several high precision free-form surfaces and an invisible combiner, the lens guides the light from the monochromatic microLED display in the right temple to the wearer’s eye. This allows the user to see a virtual image in its field of view that provides valuable information. The curved waveguide allows for seamless integration of vision correction and thus, ophthalmic smart glasses. With the standard process of backside surfacing, the individual prescription of end consumers can be integrated easily in every Rx lab around the world.

Leading-edge technology for all-day use
With unique technological advancements, tooz shapes how smart glasses for end consumers look and function: The tooz SWAP technology is a world-first that allows the independent swapping of lenses to adapt to a change in diopter or individual preferences of lens styles. Further, the ESSNZ Berlin is slimmer, lighter and comes with a higher energy efficiency in comparison to previous generations and thus, fulfills all requirements of end consumers for all-day use.

Information displayed in the wearer’s field of view is provided via Bluetooth connection from the phone to the glasses. Once connected, a wide variety of notifications can be displayed here as standard, as well as functions such as weather, navigation, calls, messaging, voice assistant and much more.
